Web Design Agencies In Michigan

Listed

Grand Rapids carries half of this Michigan list, with three companies that split neatly: a campaign shop, a B2B systems builder and a long-running small developer. Metro Detroit and the Lansing area supply the other three. Michigan’s Treasury says custom software is exempt from sales and use tax, so a question worth asking any of them is how much of your site is custom and how much is licensed.

Web design agencies in metro Detroit and Lansing

thunder::tech

thunder::tech describes itself as a full-service agency for midsize brands and says it works out of Ohio, Illinois and Michigan, with Detroit named among its cities. Recent work includes merging four sites into one for Rotary Solutions. Since Cleveland leads its site title, ask which staff are in Michigan if local meetings matter.

Web Ascender

Web Ascender says it has helped businesses since 2007 from the Lansing area, describes itself as an extension of a client’s team, and lists web design, mobile apps and digital marketing. Its home page shows lead increases such as 40 a month to 140. Ask which clients those came from and over what period.

Webfox Marketing

Webfox says it is located in Livonia and Novi and offers mobile-focused sites, ecommerce and SEO, including directory listing management. It offers a free demo for ecommerce projects. Ask how listings are handled if you leave, because local citation services can stop when a subscription ends.

TBX

TBX describes work that reaches from websites to billboards to video production, starting from strategy. It fits an organization planning a campaign with a site at its center. Ask for a sample scope and timeline for a project your size.

Kmotion Design

Kmotion says it was founded in 2008 and works with companies nationwide in manufacturing, packaging and education, with UX and UI design and sales and customer portals. A manufacturer with distributors who log in has a clear reason to call. Ask how a portal connects to your ERP, and who maintains that connection.

Engine Web Development

Engine says it has worked since 2005 and offers customized software, web development, hosting and maintenance. Named clients are small businesses such as Van’s Sport Center and Red Hen Toys. Ask who is on call if your site goes down, and whether you could get your code if you moved it to another developer.

Michigan’s treatment of custom software

Michigan Treasury’s Revenue Administrative Bulletin 2023-10 defines custom computer software as software “originally designed for the exclusive use and special needs of the purchaser” and treats it as exempt. It also says reasonable charges for modifying prewritten software are exempt “if those charges are separately stated on the invoice or billing statement.” Prewritten software itself stays taxable. The bulletin does not name website design, and we read a July 2026 archived copy.

That separate-statement language is your practical takeaway. Ask each company to itemize themes, plugins and licenses apart from design and development, and take any unclear item to the Department of Treasury or your accountant. Michigan’s LARA keeps corporation records for checking a contract’s legal name.

Portals and lead claims in Michigan

Is a portal part of a website project?

It can be, but budget for it apart. Kmotion names sales and customer portals directly, and Engine lists custom software. Ask each firm to quote the portal and the marketing site as two lines.

How do I read lead increase claims?

As an example, not a forecast. Ask for the starting point, the time period, whether ads changed at the same time, and whether you can speak to that client.

Michigan starting points by type of buyer

Manufacturers should begin with Kmotion. Midsize brands wanting a larger marketing partner can talk to thunder::tech, and campaign-heavy organizations to TBX. Lansing-area businesses have a nearby option in Web Ascender, metro Detroit small businesses and online stores in Webfox, and small West Michigan firms that want a direct developer relationship in Engine.

Details here come from each company’s own pages as read in November 2026. Figures and client results are the companies’ own, and the order is not a ranking.
