Web Design Agencies In California

Listed

Eight California agencies follow, and this list covers only three metros in a very large state: Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose. Black Flag Creative’s published floor of $50,000 shows how far apart these companies sit, so decide your budget and platform before you call anyone.

Web design agencies in Los Angeles

SPINX Digital

SPINX says it has been based in Los Angeles since 2004. Its featured work includes a redesign for The Overlake School and a medical device site for StemWave, and it lists WordPress and Shopify as platforms. Awards named on its site include iF Design and NYX. A school or regulated company should ask who reviews claims and legal copy during the build.

Mad Mind Studios

Mad Mind says it builds conversion-focused sites and SEO campaigns for established businesses, with WordPress and Shopify design, plus domain and hosting services. Its locations page also lists Beverly Hills and Irvine. It leads with AI search work and shows traffic-growth figures for 2025. Ask what data sits behind those figures and whether they come from your kind of business.

Black Flag Creative

Black Flag says professional web design projects typically start at $50,000, and it lists product design, SaaS and enterprise work. It also shows addresses in Irvine and Sacramento and reports being honored in the 30th Annual Webby Awards. This is the upper end of the list. Ask how many people staff a project at the opening price and who runs the site after launch.

Web design agencies in San Diego

TinyFrog

TinyFrog says it has built WordPress sites since 2003 and also takes smaller repair jobs, which is useful if you already have a site that needs fixing, not replacing. It offers secure hosting and maintenance and says it can design to ADA accessibility standards. Named work includes a University of California, San Diego master’s program and United Way of San Diego. Ask how accessibility is tested and what the report looks like.

Mission Bay Media

Mission Bay Media says UCSD graduates founded it in 2010 and that its headquarters adjoin La Jolla. It covers marketing sites and specialized web applications, and it lists third-party ratings from Expertise.com, DesignRush and UpCity. Treat those as directory labels and ask to speak with a client whose project resembles yours.

Web design agencies in San Jose

Baunfire

Baunfire describes itself as a team of designers, developers, strategists and producers working for brands and startups in Silicon Valley, and its writing focuses on B2B and SaaS sites. A venture-backed company preparing a launch fits this profile. Ask whether your marketing team can publish pages without a developer after handoff.

Dystrick

Dystrick says it was founded in 1999 and is based in San Jose, and it names Darryl Denny as founder and CEO. It builds with JavaScript frameworks such as React alongside custom WordPress templates, and it adds print and offline design. Ask which of those two approaches it proposes for your site and why, since it changes who can maintain it later.

Web design agencies elsewhere in California

Jives Media

Jives Media says it was founded in 2012, is headquartered in California and works with clients nationwide. It presents itself as an outside marketing team that takes on strategy, SEO, paid media and the website together. That fits a company without a marketing department, and less so one that only wants a site. Ask whether a web project can be contracted separately.

What California’s Regulation 1502 says about custom work

California’s Regulation 1502 on computers, programs and data processing defines a custom program as “A computer program prepared to the special order of the customer,” and says such a program can still qualify even if it incorporates preexisting routines. A new program built on existing code qualifies when the charge for custom programming is more than 50 percent of the contract price. Modifications to a prewritten program count when separately stated.

The regulation speaks of computer programs and does not use the word website, so don’t assume it answers your project. A site assembled on a licensed theme and plugins may look different from a React build. Ask the agency how it charges tax, keep licensed products on separate lines, and take a specific question to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

bizfile Online, the Secretary of State’s business search, is where to check the company name on your contract.

Coverage gaps and award claims in California

Why is this list so short for California?

Three metros and eight companies cannot represent the state. Sacramento, Fresno and the Inland Empire are not covered here, so use this page as a starting set and run the same questions on local firms.

How should I read award and rating claims?

As claims made by the agency. Webby, iF Design, NYX and directory labels each have their own rules, so ask which project won and what the entry covered.

Where to begin among these eight

For a large custom project with a real budget, compare Black Flag and SPINX. San Jose B2B and SaaS companies should compare Baunfire and Dystrick. A small organization that wants WordPress or a repair can start with TinyFrog, and a San Diego business needing a custom web application with Mission Bay Media. If you want search and ads as much as a site, compare Mad Mind and Jives Media on the same brief.

Facts here come from each company’s own pages as read in November 2026, and the claims are theirs to prove. Neither the table nor the card order ranks anyone.
